What is Green Wednesday?

Then there is 710 (July 10th), a lesser-known day highlighting concentrates and other high-potency items.

But when November rolls around, it's time for the deals and discounts of Green Wednesday to hit (no pun intended). Never heard of it before? Green Wednesday is a cannabis-centric holiday celebrated on the Wednesday right before Thanksgiving. It was first seen in 2016, coined by a California cannabis delivery service.

According to the lore, this delivery company regularly noticed a significant uptick in orders the week before Thanksgiving. Looking to capitalize on this, they announced it was Green Wednesday and offered steep discounts, trying to entice more folks to stock up before one of the biggest holidays of the year. 

In less than a decade, Green Wednesday has quickly become the cannabis Black Friday. Helpfully, it lands right before a highly stressful season of family and social gatherings. From coast to coast, Green Wednesday helps people stock up on the vapes, flower, and edibles they love before all the intense socializing that can come with Thanksgiving.

For some, Green Wednesday means they can share the love with their green-loving family members before turkey time. According to the Green Market Report, sales on Green Wednesday in 2023 were 42% higher than every other Wednesday in November. What's more, people purchased more cannabis goodies than on Black Friday, which is the more conventional shopping holiday. Flowhub (a cannabis POS system) also reported a massive increase in sales, with a 94% increase in transactions compared with other Wednesdays of the year. 

We also know a little bit about what types of cannabis products people are getting into as they get ready for Thanksgiving. Last year, Weedmaps reported that edibles were particularly enticing on Green Wednesday, up 81% from usual.

These statistics show us why people are heading to the dispensary or placing an online order on Green Wednesday. First, they can’t wait until Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. This suggests people are actually trying to stock up before the big day, maybe to ensure they have some stress relief on hand or maybe to share it with everyone around the dinner table.

And with everyone going headfirst into the edible category, this suggests that when it comes to combining Thanksgiving with cannabis, people are trying to keep it discreet.
