Is Delta 9 THC Legal in Washington?

We know what you’re thinking, “Is Delta 9 THC legal in Washington?” Yes, Delta-9 has been legal in Washington since 2012, when the state legalized recreational marijuana. Before we focus on Washington law, let’s take a look at hemp on a federal level.

At the end of 2018, President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill. As of this writing, all derivatives, cannabinoids, and isomers derived from hemp are federally legal and can be shipped to most states that have legalized hemp.

Following this bill, Governor Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5276, which legalized hemp cultivation in Washington.

Let’s take a look at some highlights of Washington hemp laws:

Senate Bill 5276

(X) "Marijuana" or "marihuana" means all parts of the plant Cannabis, whether growing or not, with a THC concentration greater than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of the plant; and every compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of the plant, its seeds or resin.

(5) "Hemp" means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.

(c) A requirement that any person growing hemp must submit to having plant samples tested by the department at the nearest appropriate testing facility before harvest if the person intends to sell the hemp outside Washington.

What’s Delta 9 THC?

You may not be aware that there are over 113 different cannabinoids that have been identified in hemp. These discoveries have motivated scientists to continue research and explore all of hemp’s hidden gems, yet the three most commercialized cannabinoids are:

  • Delta-9
  • Delta-8
  • CBD

These cannabinoids offer their own unique effects, but Delta-9 has continued to make fans for years. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is a naturally occurring compound that can be extracted from hemp or marijuana.

What’s the Difference Between Delta-8 and Delta-9?

Delta-8 and Delta-9 are two different cannabinoids found in hemp. A common assumption is that there is more Delta-8 in hemp than Delta-9. However, Delta 9 is more prominent in hemp. At this point, you may be wondering—what’s the difference between Delta-9 and Delta-8?

Delta-8 and Delta-9 have a similar chemical structure, but they have a drastic difference on a molecular level. Both contain a double bond, but the bond is located in a different position.

Delta-8 has its bond located on the eighth carbon chain, while Delta-9 has its bond located on the ninth carbon chain. This difference makes an impact on how the cannabinoids bind to your receptors, resulting in the varying effects.

Cannabis enthusiasts have reported feeling euphoric, uplifted, and motivated after using Delta-9. When customers have consumed Delta-8, they have reported it feeling less intense with a different experience than Delta-9. Keep in mind that the effects listed above are not guaranteed, as our bodies process chemicals differently.

Is Delta 9 Safe?

Delta-9 is safe when used responsibly and moderately. If you plan to enjoy Delta-9 or any other THC product, you cannot drive a vehicle or operate any heavy machinery after consumption. To avoid feeling any stress, it's best to take care of all your chores and tasks before taking Delta-9.

Although there are no guaranteed effects, if you consume too much Delta-9, it may lead to “overwhelming” sensations, but please note that these effects are temporary and will go away in just a few hours.

At any point, if you feel that your experience is not ideal, try to turn your attention towards a calming activity. We recommend watching a movie, reading a book, or even exercising.
