Why Don't We Talk About Delta-8 THC's Medical Benefits?

Table of Contents

Some studies have shown that consuming Delta-8 THC offers therapeutic and medical benefits. While other sites may freely discuss these findings, we here at Hometown Hero do not, and there's one simple reason why.
Below, we will share some of our favorite resources for research into the potential medical benefits of Delta-8 THC,  and the FDA guidelines by which we are prohibited from publishing articles on health topics ourselves.

FDA Regulations

Any health supplement on the market must meet stringent FDA requirements before they are allowed to make health claims.

Directly from the FDA’s website:

To be approved by the FDA as an authorized health claim, there must be significant scientific agreement (SSA) among qualified experts that the claim is supported by the totality of publicly available scientific evidence for a substance/disease relationship. The SSA standard is intended to be a strong standard that provides a high level of confidence in the validity of the substance/disease relationship.

An example of an authorized health claim is, "Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life."

While there are scientific studies on Delta-8 THC that suggest its potential use for medical purposes, these findings do not meet the standards of the FDA’s “SSA” or “Significant Scientific Agreement.”

When the FDA evaluates a health claim, the agency considers the totality of the publicly available scientific evidence (including evidence from well-designed studies conducted in a manner that is consistent with generally recognized scientific procedures and principles). If there is significant scientific agreement (SSA) among qualified experts that the claim is supported by the evidence, the agency will authorize by regulation a health claim for the substance/disease relationship.

Because of the FDA’s high standards and the relatively recent development of Delta-8 THC products, the FDA is currently of the opinion that Delta-8 THC products and their purported health claims do not meet the standards of the SSA.
