Why Are People Microwaving Gummies? Unpacking The Viral “Liquid Eddie” Method

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways
  • Melting cannabis gummies in the microwave to create 'liquid eddies' may slightly speed up digestion, but it does not significantly fasten onset times or increase potency, and excessive heat can degrade THC content.
  • The popular claim that heating "activates" THC is false for gummies, as they are already infused with decarboxylated THC.
  • More effective methods to achieve faster and stronger cannabis effects include inhalation, sublingual tinctures, consuming edibles with fats, and nano-emulsified THC formulations, which increase bioavailability and reduce onset time to 10-20 minutes.
As seen on TikTok, the latest viral cannabis hack involves liquifying edibles in a microwave, then mixing the “syrup” into a drink. Why are people melting their gummies all of a sudden? Cannabis enthusiasts are claiming this process speeds up the onset of edibles and makes them hit harder. But is that scientifically accurate?

We don’t want to burst your bubble, but as your trusted source for all things cannabis, we do want to highlight where this trend can be misleading. Melting a gummy may very slightly speed up digestion, but it won’t dramatically improve onset times. And, actually, nuking your gummies in the microwave might come with real downsides if you're not careful.

Fortunately, there is a better way to achieve fast, strong effects that does not involve melting a perfectly good gummy. But let's unpack the TikTok trend first.

What Is the Liquid Eddie Method?

In case the videos haven’t reached your feed yet, a “liquid eddie” is defined as a melted cannabis gummy mixed into a beverage of your choice.

The method for making liquid eddies is so straightforward that it can barely be called a recipe:
  • Place a THC gummy into a microwave-safe dish with a little water.
  • Microwave until dissolved, roughly a minute.
  • Mix into a regular drink, like iced tea, soda, coffee, or even stacked water (you know, that other viral trend).
  • Drink and enjoy.
There are many theories regarding this method floating around social media, and, as we’ll explain, not all of them are accurate.

Some influencers suggest that melting gummies makes the effects come on faster, or that liquid gummies feel stronger. Others say you need to heat up THC in order to activate it or that if mixed into warm drinks, this speeds up blood flow and, therefore, absorption.

So, what’s really going on? Are there benefits to melting gummies in the microwave, and if so, what are they?

What’s Not True: Heat Activates the THC

For all the TikToks claiming you need to heat up gummies to activate THC, this is twisting the truth.

If you’re working with the raw cannabis flower, you do have to activate its psychoactive cannabinoids through a process known as decarboxylation (a.k.a. decarbing). Heat transforms a non-intoxicating compound, THCA, into the one with all the effects: THC. The conversion of THCA to THC happens whether you smoke it, vape it, dab it, or cook with it.

But what all the TikTokers get wrong here is that with THC gummies, the decarbing process has already happened. Manufacturers (such as ourselves) already extracted and decarboxylated the THC from cannabis and infused it into ready-to-enjoy gummies. You don’t need to heat up your gummy to make it work (unless it’s a THCA gummy).

Problematically, additional heat will actually degrade the precious THC even further, diminishing its effects. As a reminder, microwaves emit a lot of energy. Gummies sitting in a dish with water might reach 212 °F quickly, though the heat is often uneven, with hot spots.

Another issue with the viral liquid eddies method? Cannabinoids are oil-based compounds, and as you probably know, oils don't mix with water. It will vary depending on the drink you have in hand, but when you try to mix the liquified gummy, you’re essentially trying to mix oil and water.

Some of the potency will float to the surface, some will settle to the bottom, and even more will remain on the sides as a greasy film.

What’s Actually True: Liquids are Digested Slightly Faster

But as we said above, there is some truth to the liquid eddie TikTok trend. Just don’t get too excited, because this doesn’t translate into dramatically improved effects.

Here is what is true: In general, your stomach digests liquids faster than solid foods, but like anything related to digestion, it's not that straightforward.

The primary driver of digestion speed is not liquid vs. solid, but calorie load. The stomach is designed to spend a lot of time digesting calorie-dense foods, slowing down the process so that you get more nutritional value from them. At the same time, it will process low-calorie foods much more quickly because there isn’t much to absorb.

Liquids tend to be low-calorie, and solids tend to be calorie-dense. Although there are many, many exceptions to this rule, this is where the misconception comes from.

The TikTok theory claims that liquids digest faster, so liquid edibles will onset faster. But this is true only if we account for their calorie content. In a controlled experiment, liquid eddies may have a faster onset than a solid gummy, but out here in the real world, there are a hundred and one other factors influencing the speed of digestion besides whether it's a liquid.

Physiology, metabolism, health conditions, product formulation, and even what you had for lunch will already affect how quickly your stomach functions. Melted gummies may shave a little time off the onset — sometimes — but this is likely imperceptible at best.

The Real Limitation: Traditional Edible Metabolism

Here is another edible fact: The effects of conventional edibles largely come from processing them through the liver, not through the stomach.

In most cases, when you eat an edible, the stomach actually sends most of the THC to the liver, rather than straight into the bloodstream (and then to the brain). It’s the liver that performs most of the magic. Through a process known as metabolization, THC gets converted into 11-hydroxy-THC and is then sent to the brain, producing all the relaxing, euphoric, and uplifting effects.

Although 11-hydroxy-THC is several times stronger than THC (and why an edible experience can feel more intense than an inhaled one), this isn’t a one-to-one conversion. Metabolization naturally loses a lot in the process. Studies estimate that standard edibles have only 4–20% bioavailability (absorption rate).

Even if your stomach miraculously digests a liquid eddie faster than a regular one, most of the THC is still traveling through the same route — the liver — and facing that same uphill battle of metabolization.

The Risk: Potency Loss and Inconsistent Dosing

The liquid eddie method isn’t complete nonsense, but it is overstated. So, let’s review what we’ve covered so far about the realities of melting gummies in the microwave:
  • Excessive heat can degrade THC content.
  • Most THC is processed in the liver, not the stomach.
  • Our bodies digest calorie-light foods faster than calorie-dense foods.
  • Oil doesn’t mix with water, and much of the potency will be left behind in your cup.
In summary, melting gummies could work subtly to speed up digestion and, therefore, the onset of effects, but only under very specific conditions. And honestly, even under ideal conditions, the differences you’ll feel won’t be dramatic.

Are you completely out of luck if your goal is to speed up the onset and increase strength? Focus more on formulation and format, and you’ll achieve much more reliable, consistent outcomes.

Here are just a few ideas that rely on science, not on social media hacks:
  • Inhalation: The fastest way to feel the effects of cannabis is to smoke or vape it. Cannabinoids are absorbed instantly through the lining of the lungs, with most people feeling the effects within just a few minutes. But smoking or vaping isn’t legal everywhere, or appropriate for those with certain conditions.
  • Sublingual tinctures: Let tinctures linger before swallowing, and the cannabinoids can enter directly into the bloodstream through the mucous lining of the mouth. It’s not 100%, but it is more effective than relying entirely on digestive breakdown. Effects take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to come on.
  • Consume fats with edibles: Seeking stronger effects? Because cannabinoids are fat-loving molecules, when THC is paired with fat (like in our gummies formulated with MCT oil), the fat becomes a vehicle for better absorption.
  • Nano-emulsified THC: Nano-THC molecules are extremely small versions of regular THC, and this tiny size allows them to head straight into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver altogether. They have a greater bioavailability, and effects kick in within around 15 to 20 minutes.

If Faster Onset Is the Goal, Here’s What Actually Works

If TikTokers got anything right, it's the frustratingly delayed onset times of conventional edibles. In the best-case scenario, the effects onset in around 30 minutes. Worst case, it might take 90 minutes or more before the full effects become apparent.

But you don’t have to risk melting or degrading your edibles to get a faster onset. You have better options!

Welcome to the World of Nano-Emulsified THC

Nano THC (also called nano-emulsified THC) breaks down larger natural THC molecules into tiny particles that don’t need to wait around for the digestive tract to absorb.

Rather than waiting 90 minutes or more for your digestive tract and liver to slowly break everything down, these smaller molecules mean you can feel the effects in as little as 10 to 20 minutes.

Hometown Hero's fast-acting nano-THC-infused lineup was built around the idea of increasing absorption and improving bioavailability. From THC Drinks (Sparkling Lemonades and DASH powder) to The Double Take Gummies, our nano-THC means you don’t need a microwave or a TikTok hack!

Nano THC offers a much more reliable and consistent tactic for getting more out of your edible experience.

Liquid Eddies: Does it “Work”?

Does melting gummies make them work better? Although there is a splash of truth to this viral TikTok trend, it’s minimal at best. Under most circumstances, throwing your precious gummies into the super-charged microwave is actually doing more harm than good.

Yes, our digestive tract is geared to process liquids faster than solids, but really, it's more focused on calorie-rich vs. calorie-light, not on liquids vs. solids. The real issue with nuking your gummies is that excessive heat is more likely to degrade the THC than unlock it, or leave it behind on a greasy glass.

Why experiment? Stick with nano-THC edibles to unlock the effects in 15 minutes!

When it comes to viral cannabis trends, the more you know, the better decision you can make. Until next time, Mind Your Mind.
