When Halloween rolls around, so too does the tradition of pumpkin carving. A simple toothy grin and triangles for eyes may have been your go-to jack o'lantern in the past, but this year, it's time to upgrade your pumpkin into a piece of art.
Here is how to carve your stoner pumpkin this year, starting with choosing the right autumnal gourd:
Choosing the Right Pumpkin
Considering the pumpkin is the canvas for this spooky stoner activity, finding the right one is key.
Look for one that will fit the stencil (think medium to large) with a smooth surface. Check that it's firm, with no obvious soft spots.
Carve Out the Lid
Using a small serrated knife, cut around the stem to create the lid.
Angle the knife inwards toward the stem as you make your way around, so the lid sits securely and doesn't fall inside. The hole should be large enough to fit your hand and a large spoon.
Scoop Out the Guts
Digging out the slimy insides and seeds of the pumpkin isn't everyone's favorite part, but it doesn't take long.
Using a large metal spoon, remove as much of the soft, squishy interior as possible. You’ll need to scrape along the inside to get as many of the stringy bits as possible.
Use the Stencil
With our free downloadable weed pumpkin stencil printed out, carefully tape it to the best side of the pumpkin. You may need to fold it slightly to get it to curve around the surface, or use a damp sponge to help it stick.
Use a ballpoint pen to trace over the image carefully. A firm hand will ensure the image is pressed into the skin, leaving an impression. You can also use a small nail or push pin to make holes around the stencil lines. Remove the stencil before carving.
Carefully Carve
Now for the fun part! Grab the serrated knife (or a pumpkin saw, if you have one) and start at one of the edges of the design, carefully piercing into the pumpkin. Using gentle pressure, saw back and forth, carving out the main elements.
For any sharp corners, cut one side first, then remove the knife and re-insert to begin the second line. Remove the pieces by pushing them through from the inside out.
Light it Up!
Traditionally, jack o'lanterns called for candles, but these days, there are much less risky ways to light up your creation. Get an LED candle or other small LED and place it inside. For a creepier effect, you can also grab a few colorful glowsticks and throw them inside.
