How to Make Cannabis Chocolate Cupcakes

When we crafted this recipe, we wanted to bring our readers a moist, easy-to-make, and delicious cupcake.

After a few mishaps, we have finally cracked the code.

With your last bite being just as good as the first, we bring you a cupcake that will put your Grandmother’s recipe to shame.

We have to warn you though, these cupcakes are not for the faint heart. This dessert is very rich, chocolatey, and sweet. So make sure you have a cup of coffee, milk, or water on deck.

It’s time to gather the ingredients!

Best Hemp Chocolate Cupcakes

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoons salt

  • 1 teaspoon of espresso powder

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 ½ cup of buttermilk

  • 3/4 warm water

  • 3/4 cup melted CBD butter (or melted cannabutter)

  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting 

  • 1½ cups butter softened

  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa

  • 5 ½ cups confectioner’s sugar

  • 2/3 cup milk

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract  

  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder


Best Hemp Chocolate Cupcakes

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C ). Then take the cupcake liners and line two muffin tins.

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder. Mix together with a hand mixer, stand mixer, or by hand.

  • Once blended, add in eggs, buttermilk, warm water, vanilla, and CBD butter. Combine until smooth.

  • Fill cupcake liners about 3/4 full with batter.

  • Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick can be inserted into the center of the cupcake and come out clean.

  • Remove cupcakes from the pan and let them cool completely before frosting.

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • In a large bowl, add cocoa powder and whisk through to remove all the clumps.

  • Turn the hand mixer on medium, and add in butter until smooth.

  • Add in the milk, and slowly combine 1 cup of powdered sugar with the mixer on high. After each cup is combined, add vanilla extract and espresso powder.


  • These cupcakes are freezer-friendly. Instead of frosting them after they cool, wrap each one with plastic wrap and place them in a plastic bag. The cupcakes will stay fresh for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to serve them, simply set the bag in the refrigerator overnight to thaw. Then make some frosting the next day and serve.

  • You can easily make this recipe gluten-free by adding GF flour. It is a 1:1 substitute of all-purpose flour, certified gluten-free, and truly makes the best GF cakes ever.

  • If you want to make this recipe dairy-free, replace the milk with your favorite milk substitute and add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Once you combine the vinegar with the milk substitute, let sit for 5 minutes. If you want to make the frosting dairy-free, we recommend finding dairy-free butter and the dairy-free milk of your choice.

  • We got you covered if you want to make this egg-free too. Replace each egg with 1/4 cup of unseated applesauce.

  • If frosting appears too wet, add a tablespoon of confectioner’s sugar until it is consistent. However, if it’s too dry, add more milk.

  • Hemp cupcakes are fun, but if you’re looking to confidently eat an entire cupcake without feeling like you went overboard, use less CBD butter and replace it with vegetable oil.
