Hands down, Gelato is one of today's most recognizable cannabis strains, and it all started with a group of San Francisco area breeders known as the Cookie Fam Collective. This now-legendary breeding crew, led by Berner and Jigga, was the original team behind massively popular cultivars like Girl Scout Cookies (GSC), released in 2010.
At the time of its release, Girl Scout Cookies almost instantly became the new foundational DNA that everyone was experimenting with. Breeder Mario Guzmán (better known as Mr. Sherbinski) was one such breeder. He began playing around with GSC, crossing it with Pink Panties. The result? Sunset Sherbert—another big-name strain known for its dessert-like flavor and smooth, balanced effects.
But Mr.Sherbinski didn't stop there. He kept it rolling with Sunset Sherbert x Thin Mint GSC (a popular GSC phenotype). The final result was Gelato, a genetic mashup so incredible it became one of the top-selling strains of the 21st century.
After nearly 15 years in existence, Gelato has given rise to so many new phenotypes that it's hard to keep track. A few of the most notable include Gelato #33 (a.k.a. Larry Bird), Gelato #41 (a.k.a. Bacio Gelato), Gelato #47 (Mochi Gelato), and Gelato #49 (Acai Berry Gelato). If you've already fallen in love with Gelato, trust that there are many, many expressions to explore.
