As our nation observes its 106th Veterans Day, we at Hometown Hero are once again proud to continue our
mission of ongoing support to those who served with our most recent
donation of $50,000 to the Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars.
But what is the Texas VFW, how do they help veterans, and how will this donation (which you helped us make) create a positive impact on veterans? Read on to learn more about how this amazing organization helps those who served, along with how this donation will strengthen veteran advocacy and community across the Lone Star State.
About the Veterans of Foreign Wars
The VFW began 126 years ago out of great necessity during the aftermath of the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars. Many veterans from these conflicts came home sick, wounded, and without pensions or medical care.
United under their hardships, these veterans banded together to fight for their rights and the benefits they deserved, eventually becoming the “Veterans of Foreign Wars” or “VFW” for short.
From their inception, they’ve worked to ensure that veterans of the United States military are respected, receive their earned entitlements, and receive recognition, including that of their loved ones, for the sacrifices they’ve made for our country.
Today, the VFW helps veterans in a number of ways, including:
- Helping veterans navigate the red tape to acquire the benefits they deserve
- Providing financial grants (not loans) to help active duty service members and their families in difficult times
- Offering scholarships to help veterans acquire a higher education without incurring excessive debt
- Building partnerships to serve the needs of veterans suffering from invisible injuries
And on a historical scale, the VFW has accomplished the following:
- Establishing the Veterans Administration
- Creating the United States National Cemetery System
- Compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange
- Compensation for vets with Gulf War Syndrome
- Passing the 21st Century GI Bill
- Expanding educational benefits to active duty service members, along with reserves and guard, fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq
- Improving VA medical services for women veterans
- 2014's Veterans Access and Accountability Act
- 2019's Blue Water Navy Veteran Act
- 2022's Honoring Our PACT Act
