The Art of Dabbing: Techniques and Tips for the Perfect Hit

Table of Contents

Dabbing has quickly become one of the most popular ways to enjoy cannabis, and for good reason—it is intense in both flavor and effects. With deep inhales of highly potent concentrates, it's easy to see why so many people have fallen in love with the bold flavors and powerful euphoria, not to mention the highly personalized ritual of dabbing.

With so much packed into a single dab, dabbing is definitely geared toward those who can handle the heat. If you love an intense experience, what better place to learn the art of dabbing than with our guide? Learn what is a dab, how to dab, and how to use a dab rig or pen below.

What Is a Dab?

To the uninitiated, a dab is just a silly dance move. But for all the cannabis enthusiasts of the world, a dab is a highly potent shot of vaporized cannabis concentrate that delivers powerful effects

Dabs are typically made up of sticky, dark brown, or golden-colored cannabis extracts with an extremely high THC concentration. Potency usually ranges from 60% to 90%, and some products, like distillates, exceed 90%. You'll also find dabs rich in other cannabinoids, including THCa, which converts to THC with heat exposure.

What can you dab? Any cannabis concentrate is fair game, whether it's sticky and gooey like live resin or crumbly and waxy like crumble. Here are just a few highly dabbable options:
  • THCA Liquid Diamonds: Crystalized THCa floating in a terpene-rich sauce
  • Shatter: A translucent, glass-like concentrate
  • Wax: An extract with waxy consistency and opaque color
  • Crumble: A dry, crumbly extract.
  • Live Resin: Sticky and golden concentrate with a full spectrum of terpenes

What Is Dabbing?

If a "dab" refers to the cannabis extract, then "dabbing" is the act of enjoying it. Dabbing involves placing a small amount (aka a dab) of highly potent cannabis concentrates into a dab rig or dab pen. With a torch or the built-in heating element of the pen, the extract gets vaporized to produce a smooth, flavorful, powerful, and fast-acting experience.

The Benefits of Dabbing

Potency

As mentioned, dabbing isn't for the faint of heart, but that's why people love it. Dabbing delivers a big serving of cannabinoids and terpenes, partly thanks to the concentrate but also because of how it is inhaled. Remember, dabs are a rapid, full inhale that deeply penetrates your lungs.

Flavor

One of the top reasons people love dabbing is the incredible flavor. Vaporizing naturally happens at a lower temperature than when burning cannabis in a joint or a bong, which helps preserve the delicate terpenes and cannabinoids that give each strain its distinct profile.

Whether you're after the uplifting burst of limonene or the soothing calm of linalool, dabbing allows you to fine-tune the temperature for the ultimate flavor-forward hit.

All the Elements of a Dab Rig

The key to dabbing lies in the tech. You cannot dab without a dag rig or a dab pen. The tech is an integral part of the experience.

But there are a lot of moving parts. Especially with dab rigs. Tabletop dab rigs have a complicated set of components to piece together into the full tech stack:
  • The Nail (or Banger): The nail is the workhorse of the rig. It is heated and is where the concentrate is dabbed. Bangers and nails can be made from glass, quartz, titanium, or ceramic.
  • The Downstem: The downstem directs the vapor into the rig for cooling and inhalation.
  • The Dome (or Carb Cap): Some dab rigs include a dome, which is a glass cover placed over the nail to trap the vapor and make inhalation smoother and more efficient.
  • The Base: The rig's base (aka the chamber) is usually filled with water. It cools the vapor as it passes through. The base also serves as the foundation for the entire setup and stabilizes it on a table.
  • The Mouthpiece: This is where you inhale the vapor. It's usually at the top of the rig, designed for comfort and easy use.
  • The Torch: It is not so much a part of the rig, but it’s still a crucial tool for dabbing. The torch heats the nail before vaporizing the concentrate, which comes in butane and electric formats.
Now that we know the parts of a rig, let's get to the good part: using it!

How To Dab With a Dab Rig and a Dab Pen

How To Use a Dab Rig

With all the required bits and pieces, learning how to take a dab can definitely feel overwhelming. But with a few practice rounds, it quickly becomes second nature. Here are the basics of how to dab.
  1. Prepare Your Dab Rig: Fill the base of the rig with water to a level that covers the downstem but doesn't splash into the mouthpiece.
  2. Heat the Nail: Use a torch to heat the nail (also called a banger) until it glows red-hot. This usually takes around 20-30 seconds. Allow it to cool slightly (typically 30-60 seconds) to reach the ideal temperature, as overheating can burn terpenes and ruin the flavor.
  3. Apply the Dab: Using a dab tool, apply a small amount of concentrate to the nail while it's hot, then inhale through the mouthpiece. Rotate the tool to ensure the concentrate fully vaporizes.
  4. Cover with a Carb Cap (Optional): While optional, you'll get a better vapor with a carb cap to cover the nail. This traps the heat and allows for more efficient vaporization of the concentrate.
  5. Clean the Nail: After each dab, use a cotton swab to clean the nail or banger while it's still warm. This prevents residue buildup and ensures a clean flavor for your next session.

How To Use a Dab Pen

If a carb cap, nail, and a hot torch all feel like too much, the good news is that you can now enjoy the full dab experience without a dab rig. Enter the dab pen, a simple handheld vaporizer specifically designed to handle dabs.

There are a few different brands out there, and each will come with its own instructions. However, to demonstrate just how simple the process is, here are the fundamentals of how dab pens work. Just remember to review the manual for whatever version you have at home.
  1. Activate: Most dab pens are draw-activated; simply inhale through the mouthpiece to turn it on. But some models may have a button to press while inhaling.
  2. Apply the Dab: If it's a refillable pen, use a dab tool to place a small amount of concentrate directly inside the chamber. If it's a pre-filled pen, skip this step.
  3. Inhale Gently: Take slow, steady draws to allow the device to heat the concentrate and produce vapor. Start with small puffs to gauge potency.

Dabbing Responsibly

Hopefully, it's clear by now that dabbing serves up a powerful experience. Because every hit is a potent one, dabbing likely isn't the best place for total cannabis newbies. To have a good time and keep the experience in a pleasant pocket, you'll want to have some familiarity with the effects of THC before taking that first dab.

If you are just starting out on your cannabis journey, we recommend starting with controlled, smaller servings via other formats. A great starting point is an edible. Edibles are consistent from one portion to another, with precise THC per piece. This can help you gauge serving size and familiarize yourself with the effects of THC.

Once you've gotten some THC experience under your belt, you can start dabbing. We recommend starting with a dab pen because it requires much less investment and fewer tools and is a straightforward experience.

Just always remember the golden rule: start low and go slow. For your first few times, begin with a very small serving of concentrate. Inhale slowly and gently, then let those effects peak before returning for seconds.

With practice, you'll ensure the effects stay fun and euphoric and that the intensity hits precisely where you want it.
