About Our Age Verification

The Tobacco Control Act, which placed vapor products in the same legal category as tobacco, was made law in 2015, imposing a new set of federal regulations that we must follow. One of which is the mandatory age and identity verification upon sale.

So much of what we do is towards the goal of making it easy for you to get our products in your hands as seamlessly as possible. The last thing we’d want to do is add unnecessary steps and make things difficult for you. The age verification process is necessary. We intend to stick around in this industry, and our ability to continue serving you means adapting to changes as they come and taking compliance seriously. 90% of customers have their age and identity automatically verified in the background through BlueCheck’s system and their order is processed without a hitch. Unfortunately for some, BlueCheck cannot pull a match based on the info they provided and in order to complete the order, they must use one of the other two methods available to verify their age and identity. Age verification isn’t terribly interesting to read about, so if you’re still with me here, I’m assuming you fall into this second category. First of all, we apologize for the inconvenience. You have two options. You can input the last four of your SSN, which almost always pulls a match in their system, in which case an automatic verification is processed and you are then permanently recognized as verified. From then on you will only have to enter your name and date of birth for future orders.

If you don’t want to enter the last 4 of your SSN, your other option is to upload two photos: one of your legally accepted ID (driver’s license, passport, etc..) and one that shows you holding the same ID. This will have to be manually reviewed and may take a day or two. Why am I being asked for a manual verification?

If they are unable to find a data match automatically, they may ask you for more information or even perform a manual document review to complete the verification. If no match is found, this generally means no record is found in any database matching the information you provided.

BlueCheck matches the returning user to their past verification record, meaning each user never has to pass through the verification process a second time. After the first verification with BlueCheck, you will be recognized on all sites that use BlueCheck and will only need to provide your name and date of birth to complete all subsequent verifications.

But I’ve already done this before!

The most common reason a returning customer has trouble verifying is that they misenter part of their personal information. A mistyped DOB or name (including capitalization) can cause the verification to fail. Please double-check that the info entered is correct, and remember to use the exact same name each time in the future. Changes to your personal information, for instance, a legal name change, can also cause an automatic verification to fail.

Why do you need the last four of my social security number?

The last four digits of your SSN usually provides a reliable, accurate and secure form of identity verification. This increases the likelihood of an automated match and reduces the potential for identity fraud. Hometown Hero doesn’t store or even ever see this information. In fact, the last four digits of your SSN are not even stored in the BlueCheck database. It is simply used to scan for a match in their database of existing records in order to quickly process your transaction.

Why do you need a picture of my driver’s license?

If you do not want to provide the last four digits of your SSN to attempt an automated verification, you will need to upload a picture of a legally accepted photo ID and a separate picture of yourself holding the ID. Without an automatic verification based on your data input, this is simply the easiest digital equivalent of pulling out your ID and flashing it to the cashier. All we can say about that is please understand we can’t see you and apologize for the inconvenience. Once you are verified by BlueCheck, you will be verified forever, unlike at the liquor store where they have to check your ID every time.
